I have so much to say about first grade and yet, I have so nothing to say about first grade. I think the only thing I can firmly say is: if Girly were in public school, she would be in first grade.
But she’s not in public (or private) school. She is homeschooled. And she is starting to need more than I have previously offered her…
BigGuy set a goal and met it. He wanted to finish Pre-algebra before July because it was the only way he could start Algebra I in the fall… and he did it. He actually did it ahead of time, but took some time today to resubmit two homework assignments so that he could bring his final grade up over 90%.

… this Mama’s college coursework started. Which you can see affected my writing/posting… Because I’m human and I have a lot to do, y’all.
My undergraduate and graduate degree are in non-science majors and I am now undertaking another Master degree in a science-related field. That means taking a handful of science prerequisites. It’s been a while since Mama has been in school (not THAT long) and it didn’t occur to me that summer session effectively takes a 16-week semester and crams it into 8 weeks.
Honestly, I’m not exactly sure what I was thinking when I signed Girly up to try out for a travel soccer team. Truly–I never thought she’d get on one. And if that’s the case, why have her try out?
I’m certain all of this is the reason she got accepted. Oh shit…

So, we applied to have BigGuy be part of a classical model-based, Christian co-op next year. It’s one day/week for science, a combined history-literature class, art and performing arts. However, this has sparked two calls of concern from friends that have been asked to be references…
BigGuy taught himself to read by the age of 3–despite all of his other global developmental challenges. He actually taught himself to sight-read; but since he knew all of his letters and letter sounds, I intervened and imposed phonics on him. It wasn’t easy, but it was quick.
People used to tell me that I was so chill about homeschooling and my stock reply was “Well, he can read. Come talk to me when Girly is 8 and not reading yet and let’s see how chill I am then.” Because it seems like reading becomes the barometer of educational success and Girly is another story…
Because he finished his first semester of Pre-Algebra this morning “before lunch”–as he proudly announced. He then promptly laid out his progression of math and science from here. Wow…
To meet my kid, you would never. EVER. imagine this kind of motivation out of him…
We are ending our sixth year of homeschooling. For the first 1-2 years, I waffled between scheduled and notsomuch scheduled when it came to academics. If not for all our moving, I might have tried to find a schedule that worked until I gave up. Instead, I threw my hands up and said “He’s ahead–I’m not gonna worry about it”.
But we’ve entered a new phase of life…
This was said to me recently when another parent learned that we homeschool. How does this idea even still exist? No, I mean, seriously. Are people STILL so ignorant that they believe homeschooling a child will render them incapable of functioning in society???

Today, my husband showed me how he used the Roku remote app on his iPhone to interrupt the kids playing Pandora with a video of him telling BigGuy to stop and go unload and reload the dishwasher–at which point he could have Pandora put back on. Husbeau is new to Apple products & has had the phone MAYBE a month.
Parenting level: Master.
Mama is off to install the app on her phone…
